New Zealand South Island Tour

Serendipity's Tour of South Island NZ

NEXT STOP - NEW ZEALAND!

11 August - 21 August 2017

One of the most exciting undertakings yet for Serendipity:thechoir is a tour to the south island of New Zealand. This is part of our celebration of the (almost) completion of one decade as a choir. About half the singers plus the regular music ‘staff’ are making the trip, accompanied by one spouse and one sister-in-law – brave ladies.

When do we go? Departure is almost the crack of dawn on Friday 11th August, returning Monday evening 21.

Why are we going? Tmake music with three south island choirs. First, in Ashburton, we join with the Mid Canterbury Choir for a Saturday of singing, work-shopping two combined pieces and presenting an afternoon concert with both choirs contributing half the programme each.

An early start to Sunday will see us singing in the 10.00a.m. service at St Mary’s in Timaru, and in the afternoon working with the choir of St Mary’s. Again we will have a workshop of two pieces (each choir has selected one piece for this) and then Serendipity will present a public concert, supported by the St Mary’s singers.

Then a week of totally tourist time; cable cars, skiing (!), lake steamer, tramping, shopping, snowball fights – the possibilities are endless. Winter in the beautiful south island is very special (and cold – but we’re all hardy Highland types). And this takes us about as far south as we can go, to Invercargill, where we have the pleasure of working with the Acapella singers, again work-shopping and presenting a joint concert. A long drive back to Christchurch sees us with a day free to explore the city before we fly home.

We are greatly indebted to Helen Vear, sister of one of our singers and resident in Christchurch, for initially suggesting we make the tour and offering to act as our liaison in New Zealand. The work involved in this undertaking is considerable and Helen has maintained her good humour and patience throughout the process. We are also very appreciative of the hospitality being offered by members of the choirs with which we are singing. This opportunity to meet singers from another country and different musical experiences is invaluable; we have much to gain, and look forward to making new friends.
